Find the type of editing that’s right for you:
Copyediting
Copyediting involves correcting spelling and grammar; reviewing for proper punctuation, usage, and syntax; fine-tuning structure, tone, and voice; and ensuring clarity and consistency in words, art, and style (some often-used style guides include AMA, AP, ASA, and Chicago, but in-house style guides that are particular to a publication are also used). Copy editors make simple revisions to awkward passages, but they do not rewrite text line by line, nor do they prepare material on an author's behalf. Furthermore, copy editors are expected to query about structural and organizational problems, but they do not fix these problems.
NOTE: Helping an author develop an idea into a publishable manuscript, overhauling a rough draft, identifying gaps in subject coverage, devising strategies for more effective communication of content, and creating features to enhance the final product and make it more competitive in the marketplace are tasks involved in developmental editing, which is also offered.
Proofreading
Proofreading involves checking a nearly finished product (which has already been has been edited, laid out, and designed) for typographical errors and formatting issues. This service includes proofing for correct image and table placement, page number continuity, and improper line or page breaks. Proofreaders don’t suggest major changes to the text but rather look for minor text and formatting errors and confirm that the material is ready for publication.
